Cupping therapy is an effective treatment method in cultures such as Mesopotamia, China, Babylon and Egypt, which are among the most well-known ancient civilizations. Cupping therapy (Hijama) is known as a complementary and supportive treatment method. Hijama is a treatment method in which some routines are followed before it is applied. Before cup therapy, a certain amount of fasting (3-4 hours) must be achieved. The areas to be applied are determined according to the discomforts of the people. During cupping therapy, incisions are made on the shallow skin with an instrument called a scalpel. The dirty blood under the skin is removed from the body by vacuuming with mugs that are used hygienically every time. This process is repeated as many times as necessary and the cups are kept waiting until the blood flow in the area stops. Afterwards, the application area is hygienically cleaned and dressed. Cupping therapy takes approximately 45 minutes.

It is considered appropriate to drink warm vinegar water or honey sherbet after cup therapy. After the application, you should not eat or sleep for at least 2 hours. After 12 hours, it is possible to take a shower and animal food should not be consumed for about 3 days. Sexual intercourse, sports and strenuous physical work should be avoided for 24 hours after hijama.
